There are many uses for circles in crochet. If you are making a hat or a purse you can increase your stitches and you will want your circle to create a sort of bowl. To achieve that you will want to do the following: Start: Leaving a 3-inch tail, Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (make sure to sc over your 3 inch tail) Pull the tail tightly. This closes up the center of your circle to create a nice and neat appearance. Place a marker. Row 1: 2 sc in each sc around (12 sc) move marker up Row 2: *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc repeat from * around Row 3: *1 sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc repeat from * around Row 4: *1 sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc repeat from * around Repeat row 2 having 1 more sc in between increases (row 5 would be 1 sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, row 6 would be 1 sc in next 5 sc 2 sc in next sc etc.) for desired width. There are times when you do not want to create the bowl effect for a circle for maybe a rug or you just want a flat circle. Well here is the trick to not only have it lay flat but also to make it look almost perfectly round. Use the above instructions for Start, Row 1 and Row 2. Row 3: * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next 2 sc repeat from * around. Row 4: same as above. Row 5: *2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next 4 sc repeat from * around. The trick is to NOT place your increases in the same spot. If you look at the above picture, the circle on your left was made with the same hook, yarn, and number of stitches as the one on the right. Hopefully you can see the one on the left is a little out of shape and this is perfectly fine for a hat or bag because once you stop doing the increases and work straight sc (rows without increases) that straightens out your shape. Make sure to stop by the forums and let me know how your circles are coming along. Next week we are going to do triangles. !!!
