How to increase or make one for the right and left KNIT side As you know there is a knit side and a purl side, with this lesson we will learn how to make one or increase that creates a slant for the right and left knit side. There are several different ways to increase but this is the very easiest and the most invisible way. This version is accomplished by inserting your needle in between two stitches on the knit side of your work. Take a look at the first picture to the left, I have pointed out where you will need to insert your needle for both the right and left slant.
Right side slant: Insert your LEFT needle from the back to the front under the horizontal strand **picture in the middle**; you now should have the loop on your left needle. This will be a bit awkward, insert your Right needle into the new loop on your left needle and knit it normally. Left side slant: Insert your LEFT needle from the front to the back under the horizontal strand**picture on the right**; you now should have the loop on your left needle. This will be a bit awkward, insert your Right needle into the BACK of the new loop on your left needle and knit it. Most of the time the increase is made just before the last loop, or just after the first loop to help keep your edges smooth. Noticed how you insert your left needle one way and how you then insert your needle to knit it, this gives the stitch the twist that it needs to look knitted. Unless otherwise stated, if your pattern calls for you to “make one” use the right side slant directions. Of course if the pattern says, “make one” on the right and left side, then you would do just that, use right side increase, then left side increase. Remember not all patterns are written clearly so use your good judgment for increases. It would be a good idea to learn and try various ways to increase as each method has a different outcome.
