Learn how to do the Purl stitch, where to insert your needle. If you haven’t done so already, Please be sure to see Cast On and How to do the Knit Stitch. Purl is the exact opposite of knit. You will need to cast on 10 stitches. Put the needle with the cast on stitches into your left hand and pick up the empty needle with your right hand. We are going to basically put all the stitches on your left needle onto your right. Every time we do this, it is counted as a row. You can keep track of how many rows you are doing by using pencil and paper, just put a mark, dot or whatever you like onto the paper.
Since I learned how to crochet first, I hold my yarn in my left hand also known as “Continental” style but you can hold your yarn in your right hand, known as the “English” style. Either way is perfectly fine, do what is most comfortable to you and put the yarn thru your index and middle finger to control it. **The yarn needs to be at the “front” of the needles. Insert the right hand needle from back to front into the first stitch on the left hand needle, If you are holding your yarn in: Your right hand….Yarn is at the right of your right hand needle, wrap the yarn over then under the right needle and pull the yarn away from you and thru the stitch on the left hand needle. You know have a loop on your right hand needle. Carefully slip the stitch you just pulled the yarn thru, off of the left needle. Your left hand…. Yarn is at the left of your right hand needle, wrap the yarn over the right needle and pull the yarn away from you and thru the stitch on the left hand needle. You know have a loop on your right hand needle. Carefully slip the stitch you just pulled the yarn thru, off of the left needle.** Pull the yarn tail slightly to snug it up on your right hand needle, not too tight. Remember you will have to insert the needle into that stitch for the next row. Repeat from ** to ** until all stitches on your left hand needle are now on your right. CONGRATULATIONS you have just completed a row of purling. Now switch the right hand needle to the left and repeat. If you are right handed you will always be removing the left hand stitches onto the right hand needle.
