Knitted Tunisian and Cable Stitch

Before we can do cables we must first learn the Knitted Tunisian stitch. It does resemble knitting but the fabric is not as stretchy as knitting. There is a right and wrong side and to save yourself a lot of trouble, count your loops before you start to remove them. Lets get started.

To begin, chain desired length, I used 12. Insert hook into 2nd chain from hook, yarn over pull through and leave the loop on the hook (you should now have 2 loops on your hook), insert hook into next chain, yarn over pull through, leaving loop on the hook, continue to the end of your chain. Do not turn, you should now have 12 loops on your afghan hook.

Row 1: Remove Loops: Yarn over, pull loop thru first loop on hook,* yarn over pull through next 2 loops on hook, repeat from * until one loop remains on the hook. You will always be left with one loop on the hook..

Row 2: Adding Loops: *Insert hook from front to back thru the center of the vertical loop and under the bar. Yarn over pull through and leave the loop on the hook, repeat from * to the end of the row .Repeat rows 1 and 2 for pattern.

Before you begin this stitch, Please make sure you will not be disturbed as you will have to do a little twisting and looking but once you get the hang of it you will be doing these easily. You will need a {piece of yarn, a cable stitch holder or another crochet hook.}, I use a piece of yarn but to learn I used a cable stitch holder.

Do the Knitted Tunisian stitch (repeat rows 1 and 2 twice). Please be sure that you have 12 loops. Knit into the next 2 stitches, place the {piece of yarn, cable stitch holder or another crochet hook}, in the front loops of the next three stitches, skip these 3 stitches.

Knit into the next 3 stitches, remove these stitches(the 3 stitches you just knitted) from the afghan hook and place the {piece of yarn, cable stitch holder or another crochet hook} into these removed stitches.

Knit the 3 skipped stitches, remove these stitches from the afghan hook. BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE NEXT STEPS , if the stitches happen to get dropped just repeat the above steps. Remove the 3 stitches from the {piece of yarn, cable stitch holder or another crochet hook} and put these on your afghan hook and carefully put your {piece of yarn, cable stitch holder or another crochet hook} into the stitches you just knitted and removed from your afghan hook. You should have a total of 6 loops on your afghan hook. Hold onto the stitches on the afghan hook to prevent them from coming off, twist your hook and starting with the farthest loop from the hook, put the 3 stitches that are on your {piece of yarn, cable stitch holder or another crochet hook} onto your afghan hook. Knit the last 3 stitches of the row. You are basically switching places between the 2 sets of stitches. Now repeat rows 1 and 2 of knit stitch twice.

You can vary the width of the cable by using more stitches to switch (4 or 5 stitches) and depending on the look that you want, you can shorten the rows of regular knitted tunisian between the cables (instead of 4 rows in between cables you can do 2 or 6 ). Experiment to get the look that you want.
