Sweater and Tam for you and your Dog

Make a matching sweater and tam for you and your favorite dog companion.

Even though this is a vintage pattern, you could leave off the pompom and still be in style.

DOG SWEATER Sizes: See below Materials Required: Worsted Weight Yarn 2 (4, 6, 8) ounces Royal Blue 1 ounce Yellow (all sizes) for Sweater and Tam 1 Pr. Knitting Needles No. 8 and No. 10 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL RESULT IN STITCH GAUGE BELOW. Plastic Crochet Hook size H GAUGE for No. 10 Needles: 11 sts = 2 inches NOTE: Entire sweater is worked in ribbing. Directions are given for a 10 inch dog sweater (measure from back of neck to beg of tail). Changes for 16 18, 23 inch sweaters are given in parentheses. BODY SECTION: Starting at collar with Royal Blue and No. 8 needles cast on 27 (43, 59, 75) sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 3 rows, drop Royal Blue. * Attach Yellow and work 2 rows in ribbing, drop Yellow. Pick up Royal Blue, work 2 rows. Repeat from * once, then work 2 rows Yellow, cut Yellow, work 1 row Royal Blue. NEXT ROW: Inc 10 sts evenly spaced. Continue for 2 (3, 4, 5) inches. Change to No. 10 needles and work until section measures 5 (7 1/2, 81/2, 10) inches from beg. NEXT ROW: Work across 5 (3, 11, 14) sts, leave remainder of sts on left hand needle. Work on these 5 (8, 11, 14) sts for 2 (4, 4, 6) more rows, leave sts on right hand needle, cut yarn. Attach yarn and bind off next 4 sts (all sizes) of long row for other leg opening. Work across next 18 (28,38.48) sts, turn and work on these 19(29,39,49)sts for 2 (4,4,6) more rows, leave sts on right hand needle, cut yarn. Attach yarn and bind off next 4 sts (all sizes) of long row for other leg opening. Work on remaining sts for 3 (5, 5, 7) rows, turn. NEXT ROW: Work across all sts casting on 4 sts over the bound off sts at leg openings. Work for 2 (4, 6, 8) inches. Place a marker at each edge. Then dec 1 st each edge every other row 5 (7, 8, 8) times. Change to No. 8 needles and work even for 3/4 (1 1/2, 2, 3 1/3) inches. Dec 1 st at beg and end of next 6 rows (all sizes). Bind off loosely 2 sts at a time. LEG SECTION: With Royal Blue and No. 10 needles cast on 13 (20, 27, 34) sts. Work 4 (6, 7, 9) rows. Change to No. 8 needles and work 4 (6, 7, 11) more rows. Bind off loosely 1 (1, 2, 2) sts at a time. FINISHING: Sew edges of sweater together as far as markers. Sew leg seams. Sew leg sections loosely in leg opening. With Royal Blue work a row of sl sts around lower edge of sweater.

DOG TAM 1 Pr. Knitting Needles No. 6 With Royal Blue and No. 6 needles cast on 30 (48, 66, 84) sts. Work in K 1, P 1 ribbing for 1/2 (3/4, 3/4, 1) inch. Change to No. 10 needles. NEXT ROW: * K 4 (7, 10, 13), inc in next st, repeat from * across row. NEXT ROW: P across row. NEXT ROW: * K 5 (8, 11, 14), inc in next st, repeat from * across row. NEXT ROW: P across row. NEXT ROW: * K 6 (9, 12, 15), inc in next st, repeat from * across row. For last 3 sizes work as follows: NEXT ROW: P across. NEXT ROW: * K (10, 13, 16), inc in next st, repeat from * across row. Continue in stockinette st dec 1 st at the dec points in each row until 12 sts (all sizes) remain. Cut yarn leaving a length for sewing. Thread yarn into blunt needle, draw through sts and sew edges tog. POMPON: Wind Yellow 60 (70, 80, 90) times over a 2 (2 1/2, 3, 3 1/2) inch cardboard, slip off cardboard, tie in center, cut both ends and trim into shape. Attach to top of tam. TIE FOR DOG TAM: (Make 2) With Royal Blue working tightly work a ch long enough to reach comfortably from top of side of ear down and under ear and up to opposite side of ear. Fold ch in half, attach yarn at fold and work a ch long enough to tie under chin, cut yarn. Attach ends of 1st ch to tam wide enough apart for ear. Work other tie in same manner and attach to other side of tam.

SHAPE ARM-HOLES: Bind off 4 sts (all sizes) at beg of next 2 rows. START RAGLAN SHAPING: Keeping pattern uniform dec 1 st at beg and end of every other row 22 (24, 26) times.
