ISLAND KNITTER’S SPIRAL HATS

MATERIALS: Worsted weight yarn, 4 or 5 oz total. Two or more colors. [Check your stash.]

Size 9 needles.

GAGUE: 4 sts = 1” Cast on 45 sts.

Row 1. K Row 2. P Row 3. K 2 tog, k to last two sts, inc. 1, k. Row 4. P.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 making stripes by changing colors every two rows. Work for 21-22”. Bind/cast off all sts.
After deciding weather the k or p side will be the right side, sew the ends together.
Run yarn through the sts of one edge, pull tight and secure.
Make pompom and attach to top.

Stars & Stripes Hat: The stripes are 4 rows of each color. There are 7 red stripes and 6 white, like the flag. Finish the length of 21-22” with the start pattern, following the chart below. If you have not done two color work and want to do this without trying this process right now, you can work the field in blue and embroidery the starts in later.
To make the hat without a pompom: Working across each k row: K2tog, k3, k2tog, yo, k to last two sts, inc. 1, k1. This gives you a row of yo eyelets to run yarn through to pull the hat together making a ‘top knot’ for a finished effect.
