On our way with Half Double Crochet (hdc) and Double Crochet (dc), Since these two stitches have very similar qualities, I thought it may be easier to put them together. The hdc is a very useful stitch for shaping and we will certainly learn more about that in later lessons. dc is about the most used (other than the ch) stitch in crochet so basically once you get these two stitches down, you should be able to do the other fancy stitches. Half Double Crochet (hdc): ch 11, yo , insert into 3rd ch from hook, yo pull through ch, you should now have 3 loops on hook, yo pull through all three loops on hook Yipee hdc made. * yo, insert hook into next ch, yo pull through ch, you should now have 3 loops on hook, yo pull through all three loops on hook.* Repeat from * to * to end of row. You should have 10 hdc NOTE: normally you always count the skipped chains in the beginning as a hdc (or dc, trc etc.) Ch 2 turn (remember to turn work away from you) this ch 2 will count as your first hdc of the 2nd row. 2nd Row: hdc in each stitch across (you will put a hdc into the top of the beginning rows skipped chains. Double Crochet (dc): ch 12, yo , insert into 4th ch from hook, yo pull through ch, you should now have 3 loops on hook, yo pull through two loops on hook, yo pull through remaining two loops on hook Yipee dc made. * yo, insert hook into next ch, yo pull through ch, you should now have 3 loops on hook, yo pull through two loops on hook, yo pull through remaining two loops on hook.* Repeat from * to * to end of row. You should have 10 dc NOTE: normally you always count the skipped chains in the beginning as a dc (or dc, trc etc.) Ch 3 turn (remember to turn work away from you) this ch 3 will count as your first dc of the 2nd row. 2nd Row: dc in each stitch across (you will put a dc into the top of the beginning rows skipped chains. Homework: experiment, if you have been using yarn and a larger hook, switch get a size 5, 6 , or 7 hook and size 10 thread and do hdc & dc. It is important that you do this as everything in crochet is NOT made with thick yarn and thick hooks.
