I always try to do research on a technique so that I can give you all the information. I was very surprised to find that there are several ways to create this stitch. In this article we will learn how to do the easiest ones first. You will at first feel like you need an extra hand but with practice you will get the hang of it. Please use worsted weight yarn and a size J or K hook to learn with, it is easier but once you get some practice, feel free to use smaller or larger yarns and hooks. All the methods consist of making one row of single crochet, and the next row the loops are made. The loops are made on the reverse side (the side not facing you). You can make the loop stitch in the round like a hat or beanie.
First Method: ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in remaining 9 ch (total of 10 sc) ch 1 turn.
Row 2: * Insert your hook under both threads of sc. Now grab the yarn (with our hook) that is between your index and middle finger (please see picture) and pull it thru the sc. You know have two loops on your hook, yo and pull thru both loops.* Repeat from * to * for next loop. You will place a loop in each sc. ch 1 turn.
Row 3: sc in each sc across, ch 1 turn.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 for desired length.
Second Method: ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in remaining 9 ch (total of 10 sc ) ch 1 turn.
Row 2: *Insert your hook under both threads of sc. Extend your index finger, place hook BEHIND the yarn, then grab the two strands of yarn at the base of your index finger (please see picture). Pull both of these strands through the sc. Yo pull through all loops on hook.* Repeat from * to * ch 1 turn,
Row 3: sc in each sc across, ch 1 turn.
Please use worsted weight yarn and a size J hook for practice. You can make the loop stitch with any type of yarn or hook size. You can vary the size of the loops by using a Popsicle stick, a piece of cardboard, a knitting needle, or a pencil and you can create nice even loops. Lets start with a pencil first.
Ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in remaining 9 ch (10 sc total) ch 1 turn. Row 2: *Insert hook into 1st sc, hold pencil to the back of the work, yo pencil and over hook. Pull loop through sc, yo pull through both loops on hook, * repeat from * to * across. Ch 1 , turn. Or you can do the following for Row 2: Row 2: *Insert your hook under both threads of sc. Extend your index finger, place hook BEHIND the yarn, then grab the two strands of yarn at the base of your index finger. Pull both of these strands through the sc. Yo pull through all loops on hook.* Repeat from * to * ch 1 turn, Row 3: sc in each sc across, ch 1 turn. This next method creates dense loops for a more fuller look. I will refer to a large knitting needle but again keep in mind you can use anything.
Ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in remaining 9 ch (10 sc total) ch 1 turn. Row2: *Insert you hook into sc, now place the head of the hook against the knitting needle. Wrap the yarn over the top of the crochet needle, under the knitting needle, continue to wrap it again over the crochet needle. Now your thread should be at the back of the knitting needle (please see picture). Pull the yarn that is on your hook thru the loop on the knitting needle, the sc, and the last loop on your hook. (basically you are doing a sl st through everything).* Repeat from * to * to end. Row 3: sc in each sc across, ch 1 turn.
