Entrelac crochet is a wonderful way to create stunning designs in multiple colors. Since the color changes are made at the end of every row, it is quick and easy to learn and use. We will start with the basics and keep in mind you are actually making one row of diamond shapes and when you add color it will be made in between your previous row of diamonds. I used :
1. Size J Tunisian hook
2. Red Heart Worsted Weight Yarn in 2 colors
3. Based on Multiples of 10 plus 1
***You can use more than one color but I suggest to practice with two colors first***
If you are unfamiliar with Afghan/Tunisian crochet please see Afghan Tunisian Crochet
With J Tunisian hook, ch 31
1st diamond: Pick up a loop in 2nd chain from hook and in next 5 chains. You should now have 7 loops on your hook. Work off all loops on hook. * Pick up loops in next 5 vertical bars, now pick up a loop in the next available chain stitch (see below photo), you should again have 7 loops on your hook, work off all loops on hook.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. You will have a total of 5 rows.
Bind Off Notes : You want to bind off loosely but not too loosely, you are going to have to insert your hook to attach the second color for the next row so please keep that in mind as you are binding off.
Bind Off: We are going to do a slip stitch bind off. * Insert hook into vertical bar closest to your hook, pick up a loop and pull it thru the vertical bar and the loop on your hook. * TAA DAA you just did a slip stitch bind off. Now repeat from * to * 4 more times. Slip stitch into same chain stitch that you last picked up a loop in (this would be your last afghan/Tunisian stitch)
Now take a look and make sure that you just created 6 bind off slip stitches (just start counting from your hook and to the right)
Now lets make the next square (you are still using your number 1 color).
2nd diamond: Pick up a loop in next 6 chains. You should now have 7 loops on your hook. Work off all loops on hook. * Pick up loops in next 5 vertical bars, now pick up a loop in the next available chain stitch, you should again have 7 loops on your hook, work off all loops on hook.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. You will again have a total of 5 rows.
Repeat Bind Off. Continue repeating 2nd diamond and bind off row to end. Cut yarn.
